So I hop in the car this morning and drive 15 minutes down the freeway, nothing unusual there. I then stop at the grocery store and run in to grab some lunch for the day. I get back in the car, start it up and then I hear "it". A fairly loud high pitched whine that follows the RPM that can be hear at idle and at speed. Google tells me that my power steering fluid is probably low. I pop the hood and the reservoir is full all of the belts seem fine. I have not had much time to check anything else. Any ideas? I am thinking the power steering pump, ac compressor or something powered by the belts is going to fail sooner than later.

What kind of vehicle?

Without knowing that, I’m going to guess PS pump.

I don’t know Toyota products, but given the age/mileage and symptom, I’m sticking with PS pump.

I typically start with the cheapest and/or easiest parts to replace first, perhaps Idler Pulley?

belt tensioner/idler, or belt on the way out? does the whine ever go away? at any speed?

Check the PS fluid.

Maybe alternator...

PS fluid is fine, I think the pump or alternator may be starting to fail.

No the 20 or so minutes I drove the whine didn't stop, at any speed. It could be a one of the pulley.

Rather than just throw parts at it use a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise. Or remove the belt and run the engine, if the noise goes away it’s obviously related to the belt or pulleys and you can feel each one by hand.

Yeah that's my plan more or less. I didn't have much time last night.
